Urge Governor to Restore Cuts to Supportive Housing and Other Critical Programs

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Governor Blagojevich has until December 6 to take action on legislation restoring budget cuts. One of the budget line items to be restored is $4 million for social services in supportive housing.

Background

Governor Rod Blagojevich recently signed legislation allowing the state to tap $221 million from special state designated funds in order to restore budget cuts made earlier this year.

However, he did not sign Senate Bill 1103, the appropriation bill that would allow the swept money to be spent on reversing the cuts to programs and services for some of Illinois’ most vulnerable residents—people experiencing homelessness, those needing substance use treatment, and individuals and families needing mental health care.

One of the budget line items to be restored is $4 million for Supportive MI (Mental Illness) Housing. This line item will fund social services in 769 units of new supportive housing that will serve over 900 homeless men, women, and children and/or people who have mental illness or other special needs.

Supportive housing providers provide case management, which includes life skills training and linkages to other needed services, such as physical and mental health services, substance abuse treatment and support, and employment services.

Governor Blagojevich has until December 6 to take action on SB 1103. However, we know that individuals are suffering daily due to existing cuts. Please urge the Governor to sign SB 1103 without delay.
